Don’t Waste Your Fear

In our class in Public Speaking and Debate, we’re tasked to speak in front, answering the question, ‘What’s your greatest fear?’ We were given a maximum of three minutes to speak. Our instructor held her recorder. She said she’ll listen to our speeches later, alone.

That’s what I call, a teacher’s privilege.

Anyway, what’s my greatest fear?

I knew what was it. I waited for my turn…

I listened to my classmates.

My greatest fear is…

When it comes a time when I’ll lose my friends…

When I cannot pursue my career…

When I will hear my parents crying if I will not succeed in life…

When I fail…

When my family will get sick…

Speak…

Emotion…

Death…

There were many more but I forgot them. But those answers made me tremble.

I realized that their pursuit were to find love, peace, and comfort–for them, for their family, for their friends.

There still another answer and I want you to listen to this…

‘My greatest fear is when I die and God will deny me in heaven.’

It shocked me. You know, if you were just in our classroom, you could have felt it. Though it was spoken in a laughable way, deep inside… I can see, there’s a longing… a cry…

Let me ask you.

What’s your fear?

Your fear speaks of something you resist in life. Oftentimes, we try not to understand it because we say  that life won’t work if there’s no fear. It’s true but it will be better if we don’t fear anything, isn’t it? Anyway, let me continue…

My instructor called me, ironically, I answered..

I held the recorder and spoke.

‘Every fear is meant to be surpassed… I have fear, and that fear drives out all other fear. It is the fear of God…’

I did not know why I said it. It’s such that I am just honest to myself and to God. That since I met Him, my fears were gone, what’s left was my fear of Him.

Yes! There’s one GOOD fear that all of us must have, it is the fear of God. When you fear Him, it means you have the strong desire to please Him because you respect Him as a God, a Holy God without hesitation.

The fear of God will keep us from sinning just as it says in Proverbs 8:13, “to fear the LORD is to hate evil…” The world around us is full of violence, crimes are everywhere, marriage breakups grow bigger, children are trafficked, killed! We don’t want these things to consume the whole world. We don’t want the next generation to experience such wickedness! So fear God.

‘My greatest fear is when I die and God will deny me in heaven.’

This will end if you decide to leave your own pleasure and fear God.
